Dogmatism, Musts, Shoulds: A Reflection By Margaret Cory

In our Gupta Program Facebook forum, we all can give other people advice and help based on our own experiences with the Gupta techniques. This is best done in a gentle way, and without dogmatism, since in the GP there are no ‘law’s, ‘must’s, ‘should’s or other pressurizing words.

Telling someone they must or need to do something just because it worked for yourself is not only possibly wrong but also may be very upsetting (as not everyone can access what you have been able to access, financially or geographically perhaps) and telling them they need to do it is giving them a sense of failure.

Which doesn’t help them with their recovery.

What I believe is probably not the same as what you believe. And vice versa.

So I do try in my posting and commenting not to say ‘I am right’ but rather ‘This worked for me.’ Or similar wording. (Rewording what we write not only helps the reader, it also helps the writer to reframe their mindset into a more positive and helpful one.)

There is plenty of advice in the GP, which we are free to adapt according to our circumstances. We can pick and choose from a variety of techniques, and have fun adapting them (like with the short ART songs which many of us have enjoyed making up and have often found very helpful.)

So relax and let go of exerting that pressure to do it the ‘right’ way, let go of dogmatism, let go of laying down the law to others, but do give gentle advice and help in the best way we can.

This means that for me my ‘law’ when talking to myself about what I write is ‘Don’t be dogmatic, Margaret’ which may make me a hypocrite as I just said we don’t have laws!

Having been forced to stop working aged 53 due to CFS, I was later diagnosed with Fibromyalgia as well. (With the added challenges of hypersensitivity to chemicals, smells, various foodstuffs, bright light, noise, etc.)

10 years later I found the Gupta Program and started my recovery. Wanting to pay back some small part of what I owe the Gupta Program I later volunteered to be a moderator in the Facebook Gupta Forum.
