What Are The Symptoms of IBS, Food Sensitivities & SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)?

What is IBS?

IBS is also known as spastic colon, irritable colon and spastic colitis is a group of intestinal symptoms that often occur together. The condition affects the large intestine causing symptoms that vary in severity and duration between individuals.

IBS is characterised as:

Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that is typically relieved or partially relieved by passing a bowel movement
Diarrhea or constipation — sometimes alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation
Excess gas or mucus in the stool

In three and a half weeks I was eating foods with gluten, dairy, shellfish, onions, garlic. In about six months, I was eating everything.  I felt so liberated.  I recall going to a restaurant and ordering a hamburger and swooning over it. I was swooning like Sally in the “When Harry Met Sally” restaurant scene with Billy Crystal. Every morsel confirmed that I was well and could eat whatever I wanted.

What Causes IBS, Food Sensitivities & SIBO?

We believe that these conditions may be defined as a "Neuro-Immune Conditioned Syndrome (NIC)". It may be caused by inappropriate over-the-top nervous system signals being sent to the gut in response to stress, or other stimuli including certain foods and beverages. This keeps the muscle linings of the small and large intestines in an over-stimulated state, causing many of the symptoms, and secondary issues such as an imbalance in the microbiome, which is the bacterial make-up of the gut. Gupta Program Brain retraining is intended to retrain this nervous system response and bring the whole body and brain back to balance.

The Amygdala and the Insula are parts of our brain that are responsible for the “fight or flight” response, or the stress response. It is also known as the response of the sympathetic nervous system to threats.

This Amygdala and Insula hypothesis serves as a potential unifying model for the various observations in patients. You can find out more below.

The digestive system has its own nervous system, sometimes called the “small brain.” It becomes stimulated by the brain via the autonomic nervous system during stress, and this causes problems in the gut, and may tense muscles and generally over-stimulate the gut.

Also, when the “fight or flight” response is initiated by the sympathetic nervous system, adrenaline and noradrenaline direct the bodily energies and resources to the organs which are involved in fighting or fleeing. These are the muscles, so that they can respond quickly, and the brain, so that the mind can think quickly and concentrate on the source of the danger. Therefore, all other non-essential bodily functions are switched off, such as the digestive system.

This means that food regularly passes through the gut but is not digested correctly, giving the symptoms of IBS. Furthermore, all muscles in the body are tensed, potentially including the muscles within the small and large intestines. The colon normally moves food by moderate contractions or spasms. Muscle tension upsets these rhythms, giving either too many or too few contractions, leading to either diarrhea or constipation, or both.

The gut can become highly sensitized to toxic elements in the diet, or at least foods which may now be perceived as toxic. The body is now in a very sensitized state, and therefore will over-protect itself to survive. Oxidative stress may cause “gut leakage,” triggering sensitivity reactions.

Some patients find that changing their diet seems to help, and that is because there are certain food types which are easier to digest. Eating foods which are difficult to digest while the digestive system is in this state theoretically could worsen symptoms.

At one time during my journey into and out of food intolerances, I thought I would become unable to eat most things, because the list of food types to avoid was growing. Even though as a child I had been able to eat anything that was edible.

I began the Gupta program in January 2010, hoping I would lose the CFS, which was my main concern. But as my system calmed and my body became able to heal itself, I found I was feeling a hint of a possibility that I would also be able to increase the foods which were available for me to eat without any after-effects. 


I took it very slowly. After all, I had been on a restricted diet for many years. Waiting a bit longer wasn’t a challenge, getting it wrong might have been. So I thought a bit about eating fruit again. When that thought/visualisation became comfortable, and maybe even possible, I began my journey away from food intolerances. I added a couple of blueberries to my breakfast porridge. For a few days, I did the same. All went well. Then I tried a different fruit, all went well. I was taking just one or two from packs of frozen fruit. I added a bit more one day. No problem. My visualizations were coming true. This process continued.

I can now eat any fruit I want in reasonable quantities.

Later I added yeast by eating a sliver of pitta bread, in amongst a meal out with family. Again only after gently visualising the possibility for a few days until it felt comfortable. I slowly increased my intake of food containing yeast.

I have done the same with all the foods I thought were causing me challenges, but by persuading my amygdala/parts that there was nothing to fear from eating healthy foods I have been able to expand my diet choices back to how they were when I was in my teens.
